This Parish Church of Castlecomer
was built by a people of faith and it is a people of faith
that makes it what it is today. Day by day the worship of
God takes place here. People come here to find peace and quiet,
to give thanks to God for his many blessings, to pray for
their own needs and the needs of their friends.
For more than two centuries this site has
been a place of worship. A simple thatched chapel stood here
in the 1750’s and was replace some forty years later
by the Church of the Holy Cross which served the people until
the present Church was built.
The foundation stone for the present Gothic
style Church was laid on the 16th August 1844 by Father Joseph
Butler P.P. and was completed in 1852 during the ministry
of his successor Father Edward Alyward P.P. It stands as an
imposing reminder of the sacrifice and resilience of a people
racked by famine, but determined to build a house ‘fit
for the Lord’ from meagre resources and in the most
difficult circumstances.
The Church, designed by William Deane Butler,
Dublin, was dedicated to the honour of Our Lady under the
name ‘ Church of the Immaculate Conception’
Greatly admired features of the Church include:
The matching altar, ambo and chair, The painted ceiling, the
stained glass windows, the Stations of the Cross and the very
ornate sanctuary lamp.
